light at the end of the tunnel

Tonight at dinner, Nick was asked to say the prayer. I love it when little kids pray, because they are so innocent and sweet! Nick said he was thankful for this day, and for the food (which was french toast) and he asked that it would nourish and "healthen" our bodies. And then, he asked that he would be nicer to me, and to Sam, and to his parents. My heart melted.

Rough Days

This week has been a rough one with Nick. He's at the ripe old age of 5, and he is trying to see how far he can push the boundaries. Yesterday, he really wanted chicken nuggets for breakfast. He threw a fit when I told him he had to have some cereal first! He had to spend some time in his parents room, because he wasn't listening. He also had a really hard time cleaning up the toy room yesterday, and he had to get a spanking (not from me) because he wasn't cleaning. Today, he told me he would pour his kool-aid in the sink. I told him not to do it over the grapes that we were getting ready for dinner. So what did he do? You guessed it. Good thing he's such a cutie!

Sam went to his first day of summer school today. So we dropped him off, and we had to wait forever before going in. And then we had some miscommunition, and so Sam was stuck at school for an extra 20 minutes.

After summer school was over, we ran errands today, and went to Michael's to get Nick some cool new treasures (which was a necklace pendant), and Sam got a whole pack of googly eyes! Their mom also got some cool little felt dinosaurs and sea creatures, and place mats. So we made those! I'll post some pictures later. Because I'm tired, and didn't take any pictures of them today.

When we were at Michael's checking out, the cashier called Nick by his name. She asked him if he remembered her, and they all looked so confused. I had no idea what was going on. She was Hilly's (their old nanny) friend. So that was fun for them.

And then we went to Smith's to get a few things for dinner. (Chicken Parmesan...yum!) Sam got some fun sea animals in a container with an octopus lid, and Nick got some Milky Way "Space Treasure" marbles that he ended up getting taken away, because he decided to put them in his mouth.

Nick is really cute, and I hope that the rest of this week is a little better, and that he can adjust to a new nanny a little bit better than how it's been the past couple of days...

Sidenote: Today, I realized how hard it is to raise kids. It makes me wonder if I will be able to do it. Props to Jeane for doing it with no fingers or legs.

Today was tough. Good thing it's Tuesday which means...The Bachelorette is on Hulu, and new free downloads on iTunes! And now...I'm going to go to bed so I'm well rested for tomorrow. Summer school, cleaning ladies, and our first batch of sugar cookies!

What Happened Friday

So, I didn't post anything all weekend, because I went and stayed with my grandma this weekend. We ran errands (errands = 3 lovely hours at walmarts* + planting new flowers). It was a tiresome couple of days, but it was lovely.

On Friday, Jeane had been asked to speak up at SUU (shoutout t-brids! (: ), so Tony helped her get ready, and they left. Before leaving, Tony asked me to read her talk to see how long it would take. I read it, and was bawling! She talked about everything she had to go through, and how much she learned, and now treasures the Atonement of Jesus Christ. She also said she was very lucky, because she only lost her fingers, and part of her legs. She also said that the whole time she was going thru this, she kept thinking about how much she wanted to be able to hug her boys, and how now, she can. She really is such a hero.

Jeane left her wallet, and told me we could go out to lunch and to the park or somewhere else fun. I asked Sam and Nick what they wanted to do, and they told me they wanted to go swimming again. So we cleaned up their toy room, made their bed (they share because the latter to the bunk bed is broken), and put on their swimsuits and life jackets.

Those boys love to swim!! I think we swam for 3 hours, before Sam's goggles broke, and I insisted that we eat lunch. They decided Artic Circle sounded yummy, so we went there. We ran back to their house first, and grabbed some shirts, a water bottle, and another pair of goggles. Then we went thru the drive thru. I asked them what they wanted to do after, and they told me they really really really wanted to go swimming again. So we did! We probably spent at least 5 hours in the pool on Friday!

Sam was trying to learn how to dive, and scraped his toes. So we had to get a band-aid. Next time we go swimming, I'm going to try to teach them how to swim!

*That's what my grandma calls it. She's cute.

Filled with:

  • Folding and putting away clothes.
  • Making breakfast and lunch. After the boys ate candy.
  • Spongebob Squarepants.
  • Washing dishes.
  • Reading.
  • Swimming at my grandma's house.
  • Eating cookies.
  • Ordering pizza.
  • Playing with action figures.

  • Eating pizza.

I am soo tired! I can't even begin to imagine how exhausting it is to be a mother and have to do this day in and day out.

Here's the cute family:

Also....
read this article.
And this one.
And this one.

Jeane had an ovarian syst over the holidays in 2008. They took her to the doctor's, and they said to go home and enjoy the holidays. In the next 4 days, they went to the emergency room 5 times. The doctors said she was coming in for more pain medicine, but everytime they left, they gave her more. Finally, Tony freaked out. Had he not, the doctor's said she would have died that night.

The syst had grown, so much that it blocked blood flow to her ovary, until it died. Since it was dead, it started releasing toxins into her body. And the medicine that she took to get the toxins out, causes most other patients to lose all their limbs. She was lucky in that, she only lost her legs below her knees, and her fingers.

I feel so blessed to have gotten this job, and I already love their boys! She does so much, even though she's so limited. She is truly....a hero.

June 2nd: Cleaning ladies, library, and super glue!

Today, the cleaning ladies came. I read, and they yelled at each other in spanish. And then, we went to the Library.
I drove their big truck! It was huge! I'm used to little, cute, Camry's. Not big trucks. But we made it there safe.

Nick really wanted some books about pirates, but then he found some cool ones about sea shells. So he got 3 about sea shells, and then he got one about jellyfish, and...something else. Sam got 3 about scorpions, and one about giant squids, and another animal one.

Another highlight from the day, was Nick was gluing his grand jewels together for his mom with super glue. And twice, he got some on his fingers. He broke down! He said he didn't like it when they were sticky, so we washed our hands, and then he got some in between his pointer and middle finger. Good things nanny's are compassionate...the poor boy wouldn't know what to do!

The First Real Day

Yesterday went by so slow! I woke up early, and got ready for the day. When I went downstairs, Nick was already up and in his parents room. He didn't seem to be bothering them, so I just sat on the couch and read.

The boys ate cereal for breakfast, and then they showed me where things went in their toy room. And then they got dressed for the day, and we made lunch later.

Both the boys have 'treasure chests', and Nick has a lot of "grand jewels", so we played with those for most of the day yesterday. He also had a shredder, which is a shouting thing they got from a Jazz game. For hours, it seemed, we put his grand jewels through the megaphone-ish type thing. And then, he came up to my room with me, and we took a couple pictures:

Here are his "grand jewels". He is really good at making patterns!
After Tony got home, I swung by my aunt's condo to make sure the AC was turned off, and then I went and ate dinner with my grandma, and then took her to go swimming.
I was sooo tired when I got home!

Day 1

....kind of.

After I moved in, we went outside to listen for the frogs before bedtime on Monday night. Sam, the 7 year old, really likes spiders (he has a triantula named Fang), and he went to the house next door to them. He found a black widow. Eww!!

Getting the job, Moving in, Becoming a part of the family

Hello! I decided that this would be the best way to document my adventures as a new, live-in nanny for the Taylor family. Mostly because, I'm really behind in my journal, and I have a feeling that I'm going to be learning a ton, so I can just type what I learn, almost everyday of being here. So....let me tell you about how this all came about (:

I moved to St. George, Utah after school ended in April to live with my grandma. I was hoping to find a job and just bum off her for a few months, but...the economy is not great right now, and so no where was hiring. I went all over St George asking for applications, and then I would turn them in, and they'd either tell me that they weren't hiring, or they wouldn't call me back. I had a total of one whomping interview, and so...that night, I put my name and contact information on a website called care.com. I said I would be available from 9 until 10 everyday but Sunday. And, I was so discouraged, and I didn't know if anything would become of it. But I thought "what the heck? I'll give it a whirl."

The day after my interview at an old folks home to be a server, I was getting ready for the day when I got a text from a number I didn't recognize, saying "Alyssa-I got your # on care.com. We are a st george family w/ 2 boys ages 5 and 7. We need a live in nanny. We are LDS and very easy-going. If this is something you would be interested in, pleast let me know. Thank you." So I said I was very interested, and we set up the interview at their home. I had no idea what I was in for, when I drove there, and tried to park in the circle they live on. I can't park...at anytime of the day, and so it was just great watching me try. (If anyone was) Anyway...I drove around the circle like...8 times trying to park (good thing I was 10 minutes early!!) before I went up to their door.

I thought I would just be a live in nanny, and the parents would both be working all the time. When I knocked on the door, their current nanny, Hillary answered the door. She was really cute, and very nice. The two boys were watching TV, and Hillary started to make dinner, and the boys went outside to play. I started chatting with Hillary, and she said she really loved being their nanny. She was leaving because her mom lives in Orem, and she wanted to be closer to her. She said the boys were well behaved, and that she was really sad that she had to leave. She even put off telling them about it for about 3 weeks, she said. Little did I know what the parents would be like..

They are both such amazing people! The mom came in from the garage, in a wheel chair, and she shook my hand..she didn't have fingers. She told me that they usually made dinner, and having "Hilly" make it was rare...weird, even. We went into their office, and I handed her my resume. The first thing listed on it was that I babysat an autistic child once a week for about 4 years. She asked if it was challenging. I said that it kind of was, but I didn't really have to do much. She seemed impressed, and then she saw that I helped with the Special Olympics, and hello...she's in a wheelchair. Of course she thought that was awesome.

We talked some more, and her husband came in. They told me about how she had gotten sick, and how her oldest kid, Sam, had to be pulled out of kindergarten, and how he felt abandoned when she was in the hospital for 8 months. They said they wanted someone long term, so that the kids didn't get attached to someone, and then have to say goodbye. I told them I was still planning on going back to school in the fall, maybe. I wasn't really sure. She said that she went off feelings, and sometimes, she knew that was dumb to admit. But she said she really liked me. Her husband said that usually, her first impressions were always spot on.

They asked me when I could start if I was offered the job, and I said whenever. Then, I went up with the dad (Tony) and he showed me the room I would be staying in.

I left beaming. I called my mom and told her I really really really wanted to take it. Because again....no where was hiring, and it was decent enough pay ($300/week. Which, is amazing to me)

Embarrassing as this sounds, I started making a list of things that I wanted to buy once I had enough money to do so. That list grew...exponentially that night.

A few days later, I was at Costco with my aunt, and we were just talking about it. She said that it sounded like I pretty much had the job. But I didn't want to get my hopes up to high. We decided I needed to do something drastic, to make an (even better) impression. I texted the mom, and told her that I was still interested, and I could move in with them if it was offered to me (I told them at the first interview that I wasn't sure if it'd be cool with my grandma being the reason I was down here). She texted me back very soon, and said that she was wondering if I was going to go to school full time in the fall, or if I could be with them for at least a couple of years. I said that I could probably get my schedule to coordinate with theirs, so she said she would talk to Tony and see.

About two nights later, I was laying in bed reading, when I got a text from her saying that they just wanted to give me a heads up, that I was still their top pick, but they had promised two other interviews, and so they figured that they owed that to them before making a final decision, but they would know for sure the next night, around the same time (10:35). I was antsy all day!! I was trying to find things to keep me entertained, but it was hard to do at my grandma's. So I went over to my aunt's condo. We decided we would go to Target and I could add things to my list mentally of things I would buy when I was making $300 a week. The day still, seemed to just drag on and on. I ended up staying at my aunt's condo that night, and my phone was almost dead (thanks to a boy who knew my phone was dying, and that it needed to have battery power, and my charger wasn't with me...) so, I turned it off for a while, and he started calling again. I was on facebook chatting with Laura, and she said she hoped I got it, and she had her fingers crossed for me.

I didn't get a text that night, but later on the next day, I did. Jeane wanted to know if there was a time that day that I could come talk to them. I said I was available whenever. So we decided on 7. Yep. During the Biggest Loser finale. My aunt told me to say that I had to watch that, but we could talk during the commercials. I just went over, and we took a tour of their house, and I got really excited about it. I talked to Laura before the interview, and then after, but much later. I went straight to my aunt's house, and almost peed my pants I was so excited!

My mom was't thrilled, so I held off on telling her. And when I finally did, it didn't go over very well. And I told my grandma when my car was almost all the way packed up, and I was just getting ready to leave. Good thing, they live less than a mile away from my grandma.

My dad also went over to meet them when he was down for Memorial Day, and he was impressed. It was crazy...she told us about how she got sick, and what it's been like living without feet and fingers. We also looked at the room, and they told me they would buy a new TV, and a new desk. So, I'm pretty settled into my little apartment/nook above their garage! And I am really loving it!
